Action Against Hunger – Spain, as part of the Action Against Hunger International network, is a non-governmental, private, apolitical, non-confessional and non-profit organisation that fights hunger and its root causes worldwide. Founded in France in 1979, and with 40+ years of experience in conflict zones, natural disasters, and response to food crises, it is one of the leading international organizations specialized in addressing hunger and its underlying causes. Approx. 500 expatriate and more than 5,000 national employees are working in the International Network in more than forty-six countries. 

Action Against Hunger has been operating in the South Caucasus region since 1994 and its current programmes focus on the following areas: Food Security, Livelihoods, Agriculture, Water and Sanitation, Economic and Rural Development and Protection.

Currently Action Against Hunger (AAH) South Caucasus has an opening for a full-time Agricultural Technician based in its Sukhumi/Gali office


Key activities in your role will include

Technical support

  • To actively engage in the beneficiaries’ selection process under the guidance of Program Manager and Project Facilitator;
  • Plan each specific agricultural project intervention with the project team;
  • Support Project manager and Project Facilitator with development of plans (i.e. activity plan and training plans, etc.) for implementation of relevant project activities;
  • Support the Project Facilitator to identify the training needs of farmers;
  • Support the development of agricultural training materials to be utilized;
  • Support design and production of awareness raising, information and promotional   materials (booklets, posters, social media, videos etc.) that may be required;
  • Take note of any changes in the food security situation, socio-economic and agricultural conditions in the intervention area;
  • Keep the Program Manager and Project Facilitator informed of the activities, problems and successes;
  • Provide recommendations to Action Against Hunger on project improvements and future programmatic support.

Supervision and training support (Agricultural Training Centers)

  • Supervise and provide technical support to ATC Managers and Trainers;
  • Ensure that ATC Managers and Trainers are effectively engaged in their tasks and perform their duties according to Action Against Hunger expectation;
  • Ensure that staff under your supervision develop weekly and quarterly activity work plans (or as agreed), and adhere to them;
  • Support the Project Facilitator in overseeing the implementation of farmers’ training days to ensure that they are performed according to expectations;
  • Provide the Program Manager and Project Facilitator with field reports and assist in the preparation of other reports as needed.

Coordination and Monitoring

  • Coordinate relevant activities with all key stakeholders in the intervention area working on agricultural and rural development initiatives;
  • Support the Project Facilitator to monitor the conformity of the field works (trainings, field visits, meeting, etc.) with the standards of Action Against Hunger, and as per the agreed activity planned; 
  • Monitor ATC activities with regular follow up visits, identify problems and provide recommendations for improvements;
  • Support M&E in relevant data collection.

Do you meet the profile required criteria?
  • University degree or technical diploma in a relevant field (agriculture, horticulture etc.);
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in agricultural extension in a similar context; 
  • Previous employment in Action Against Hunger or similar INGO is advantageous;
  • Knowledge of agricultural and rural development programming; 
  • Experience identifying local needs and constraints of agricultural systems at the community level;
  • Experience in developing and providing technical training and awareness raising support specifically to farmers; 
  • Experience of upgrading agricultural production with new technologies;
  • Knowledge of recommended plant densities, adequate plant nutrition, crop protection from pest and diseases, seedling production, etc.
  • Experience with IPM strategies and monitoring pests and fungal diseases;
  • If required, able to establish agricultural demo plots as a means of displaying for Good Agricultural Practices for extension;
  • Good organizational capacity;
  • Good communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently, but also coordinate effectively as part of a team;
  • Extensive experience of working in a multi-ethnic context;
  • Russian fluency required. English an asset;
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel etc.);
  • Flexible with respect to working hours and place of work;
  • Valuable prior experience in issues related to the promotion of gender equality or personal commitment to gender equality.

Our remuneration package:
  • Based in Sukhumi or Gali with field trips to project locations;
  • 40 hours working week; overtime required occasionally; 
  • Contract according to the Labour Code;
  • Health insurance.
